The bigger picture

"The idea is that… people tend to make judgements about people when they don’t really know anything about them. So what I wanted to do was illustrate how when you see the bigger picture… when you have a bigger picture in your head your opinion of someone or something may change"
Jann Duna, Director

That made me think about this commercial for The Guardian.

But either in Gypo and in the ad we don't see lights or cameras, we don't see market shares and targets, prizes and broadcasters...
We accept the small picture till someone don't show us the bigger one. But even then... We look a the magician and we admire his performance. Shouldn't we ask for the biggest picture, instead? Or, simply, we prefer don't get there?

Double deck buses for green messages?

Great touchpoint, but isn't it a little bit incoherent with the message?
What about cycles and bicycle rickshaw? Or, better, GREEN BUSES?!

People are good: Flying home

Travelling alone is great, because you need meeting people.
Last time I went home I was sitting near two girls. They were studying art in Pisa.
I asked them about their preferred artists, here is what they teached me:

Jackson Pollock

from Wikipedia
"When I am in my painting, I'm not aware of what I'm doing. It is only after a sort of 'get acquainted' period that I see what I have been about. I have no fear of making changes, destroying the image, etc., because the painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through. It is only when I lose contact with the painting that the result is a mess. Otherwise there is pure harmony, an easy give and take, and the painting comes out well"

Bill Viola

Sweet Light

Ocean without a Shore

from his website:
"Bill Viola is considered a pioneer in the medium of video art... Viola uses video to explore the phenomena of sense perception as an avenue to self-knowledge... Using the inner language of subjective thoughts and collective memories, his videos communicate to a wide audience, allowing viewers to experience the work directly, and in their own personal way"

Cornelia Parker

from Wikipedia
"I resurrect things that have been killed off... My work is all about the potential of materials - even when it looks like they've lost all possibilities."

Is happiness undermining health?

Separated by a common language

Actually, it seems that language is the only thing that links us.
Who's the man?

p.s. "separated by a common language" was an original expression of george Bernard Shaw, relating to England and America. That expression was then used by Watzlawick and referred to the relationship among men and women.

First, the statement allows advertiser to engage with drivers.
- I know what you think (or, I know who the guilty is)
- I agree with you

Then the firm ("but I'm sure") request, using explicitly the first person "I", and addressing the issue

Pop Punctuation

Accordingly to grammar rules, colon and semicolon are quite different (colon, semicolon).
Accordingly to daily usage they both seem to be just an hassle.

What about quotation marks? Wikipedia relates of the many uses of quotation marks, but, it seems not to list the simpler aesthetic, ornamental end.
When aesthetics overtakes grammar… consequences can be very funny and unexpected...

Our brand is "crisis"

Interesting documentary by Rachel Boynton.
It's about the various strategic approaches suggested by GCN (now Greenberg Quinlan Rosner a leading research and strategic consulting firm) on the bolivian election of 2002.

Here you can find an excerpt

It was presented yesterday night by the Italian television program "Report". And here is the transcription of the entire episode (in italian).

p.s.
Goni (Bolivian president) claim was: "se puede!"
Does anyone remember italian left party representative claim?
Why don't you check the leading research and strategic consulting firm's clients list? (you can find it here. Section Int'l Campaigns...)

Quotes: moral injections

I love quotes and aphorisms, and sometimes I use them like booster injections of conviction.

Today I found this interesting list of "101 Quotes on Creativity, Innovation, and Risk Taking"
Here are my best 5

1 - Discovery is seeing what everybody else has seen, and thinking what nobody else has thought. (Albert Szent-Gyorgi)

2 - You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take. (Wayne Gretzky)

3 - A problem well stated is a problem half solved. (Charles Kettering)

4 - I refuse to be intimated by reality anymore. What is reality? Nothing but a collective hunch. (Lily Tomlin)

5 - I am looking for a lot of people who have an infinite capacity to not know what can't be done. (Henry Ford)

Grandparents Marathon & Behavioural Converters

Gaming and workout: incentive makes the sacrifice acceptable (and fun).
It's like flavoured cough syrups for children.

"An incentive is a bullet, a lever, a key: an often tiny object with astonishing power to change a situation" (Levitt & Debner, Freakonomics)

Phisical exercise is vital for the overall wellness of aging people.
Unfortunately videogaming might not be the best of incentives for grandparents...

But probably something linked to their grandchild might: what about a grandchild-grandparent marathon?
